template read-only

When quitting Word Mac 2016, (but using Office365) on MacOS 10.11.6 El Capitan, I get message

'cannot save changes to global template because it was opened with read-only access'

Have to save and rename normal.dotm. I am only trying to save keboard shortcuts to Styles.

I saw the answer about vba and Windows 10 but cannot find the equivalent on Mac to

%appdata%\Microsoft\Word\Startup

Is there something in permissions I can change?

The template normal.dotm appears to be in

̃/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates

Microsoft 365 and Office | Word | For home | Windows

It's not working at the moment because the piece of crap VBE shipped with Office 2016 doesn't have an immediate window. Microsoft has promised to replace this junk VBE with a real one. When it comes out, the immediate window should work. Every week I install the Insider Fast build hoping to see the new VBE. So far, no joy.

Unless you specified otherwise in Word preferences, your Normal template should located here:

    /Users/mike1/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.Office/User Content/Templates/Normal.dotm

I think you may be looking at your Normal template for Word 2011.

Thank you. I've updated my page on How to Find the Normal Template. Can you tell me if the method of going to the VBE immediate window and entering"debug.print application.NormalTemplate.Path" also works on the Mac?

normal.dotm is  in /Users/mike1/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/Normal.dotm, and is not read-only according to Finder, it is read and write, rw-rw-r--

But the 'User Templates' folder has a Mac OS flag 'locked' set, according to FileExaminer and I can't change that

Not sure about Mac version, however:

The normal template should NOT be in the startup folder. It should be in the user templates folder.

Try marking your normal template's properties so that it is not "read only."
