Onenote 2016 will not sync

Onenote 2016 will not sync to office 365 Onedrive.

I have tried the following:

  1. Removing the notebook and opening it from Onenote online. The notebook appears in the notebooks section but will not sync even when forced.
  2. Created a new notebook on Onedrive. Again, the notebook appears in the notebooks section but will not sync even when forced.
  3. Removed Office 365 from the computer and reinstalled it. Again, the notebook appears in the notebooks section but will not sync even when forced.
  4. I have followed the link on the sync information and it correctly opens up the notebook on OneNote Online. However, it still will not sync.
  5. I have tried opening the notebooks in OneNote Desktop for Windows 10. This works but I need to Onenote 2016 as I need to import some saved OneNote documents from my local computer.
  6. I have tried signing out of the Office 365 account in OneNote and then signing in again. This did not work.
  7. I have tried signing in with a personal microsoft account with Onenote and then opened a OneNote notebook and again would not sync.

It appears that the problem lies with OneNote 2016 on this computer. Is there anyway of factory reseting the whole installation? I have uninstalled Office 365 and reinstalled but it remembers all the settings. I don't want to do this for all of Office, just OneNote. If anyone can help I would really appreciate this as this is a big problem for me right now.

    Hi Bob,

I had the same trouble between my OneNote 2016 from my Tablet, with my Office 365 of my LapTop and I solved it as follows:

    1. I cleared the OneNote cache as Tisky described below.
    2. I opened "OneNote Online" using my Web browser and signed in my account. Then I opened any Section with my information in the Web Browser and in the Menu of the Online OneNote I selected: "Open in OneNote", then I saw a message that Microsoft One Note will try to open in my device and sync, I allowed it, and then it synchronized all the information again with the local OneNote 2016 of my Tablet.

Maybe this will work with you. Also, maybe try the second point before clearing the OneNote cache, I tried the second point after doing the first point, but maybe this first point is not necessary.

    Hope this works with you.

    Juan

    Hi Bob,

Based on your description, you can try clearing the OneNote cache.

    1. You need to change the folder options, go to File Explorer > under View tab > Options > under View tab > choose Show hidden files, folders, or drives.

2.Go to C:\Users(User name)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\16.0\cache then clear all the caches.

Note: Clearing cache will resync all notebooks to local, please back up all the important data before you clear the cache.

    Regards,

    Tisky
