PowerPoint 2016 - Edit Data Not Abailable

I opened a PowerPoint 2010 presentation in PowerPoint 2016, and the Edit Data is grayed out -- do not have the ability to edit the data that was in the 2010 presentation.

Any thoughts?  This is my first experience with 2016

Try opening Excel first and leave it running, then launch PowerPoint, open your presentation and try Edit Data again.

Here is an older workaround in the reply marked as an Answer. This one was written for Office 2007, so for your version you would change Office12 to Office16: Powerpoint 2007 chart will not open Excel table when trying to "edit data"
