CANNOT REMOVE FRENCH DEFAULT PROOFING LANGUAGE

I have Office 2013 and somehow Word's spellcheck default proofing language has been set to both English and undesirable French. Can someone please advise how to uncheck/unselect French in the Language/Set Proofing Language menu?

English language without French shows properly in both Control Panel/Languages and Normal.dotm template.

Select the entire document (Ctrl+A) and apply the correct language. Word tends to get the default proofing language from Windows, so check what is set in your Windows regional settings. All of this is in the article I referenced.

The check marks in the list of languages at Review | Language | Set Proofing Language only indicate which languages have been installed. Most Office installations include proofing tools for more than one language.

What you should do is clear the check mark next to "Detect language automatically" in the Language dialog box, so that Word won't guess the language, and change it, as you type.

Select the correct language in the Language dialog. There are two ways to access it:

    1. The hard way: Review | Language | Language | Set Proofing Language.
    2. The quick way: Add the Language button to your status bar. Clicking on it opens the Language dialog.

FWIW, this is detailed at http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/MasterSpellCheck.htm#HowItWorks.

    Thank you for prompt reply.

The check marks on both detect language and do not check spelling/grammar are both clear. In the same set proofing language window , there are about 50 languages listed but I now see that all the English, French and Spanish have small abc checkmarks next to them, meaning every country version for each of these languages has checkmarks like French Cameroon, Canada, Caribbean. All the other languages besides these three do not have abc checkmarks.

In Language Preferences, the editing language only shows English.

Can you please advise a way to uncheck French and Spanish, so that spellcheck does not indicate words are misspelled because it's comparing to French and Spanish language?

I probably did something wrong because it didn't work, so I just copied text into a new document and that is now correctly doing proofing. Thank you all for suggestions.
