Has anyone EVER successfully uploaded and imported PST files into an Office 365 email account?

I attempted to upload a PST file this week with the hope of uploading 20 other ones and could not ever get the process to get past initialization.

I called Cloud Services and spent 2 hours with them only to have them tell me they had to run some processes for my account that would take a few hours and they would email me when it was done... crickets.

I'm frustrated.

Not that the procedure was that difficult to follow, but really, the entire process seems to be really just over complex... and the troubleshooting tools are, well, non-existent.

I really believe the problem is pebcak and that if I can find someone who has actually done it and could get some tips, I might stand a chance.

The job is submitted successfully.

After just a few minutes, the Status = Failed.

The Additional Info says:

"Please create Primary and Archive Mailbox for and create a new job"

I welcome all comments from anyone who has actually done this task, but just ask that the ASSPIEs (Another Stupid Self Proclaimed Internet Expert) refrain from their "helpful" guessing.

Thank you.

It appears that I did everything correctly except for the configuration of the CSV file.

Where it asks for the email address, it really wants the GUID.

Get-Mailbox MBXNAME | fl *guid*

This is a significant missing component in the instructions to configure this action.

Fortunately, I had a pretty good engineer assisting me.

Yes, this thread is complete with that info.

Again, this underscores my original question on whether anyone has successfully done this.  That would be a standout piece of information they would have keyed me in on.

Unfortunately, I blamed myself for not understanding or not executing which resulted in me waiting until I was completely frustrated and exhausted before asking for assistance.

2 lessons here:

  1. Things are not as they appear.
  2. Don't hesitate to ask for help.

Thank you all for your input.

Have a great life!

    Hello,

    1. Create relevant target mailboxes in Office 365. - Done.  This mailbox has an E3 license and looks just like the other E3 users.
    2. These mailboxes should be licensed with Exchange Online licenses. - They are.  Purchased and attached license to user account.

    3. The error message, the archive mailbox may also not be enabled. - The Archive was enable for this user per Microsoft Online instructions.

I would like to verify that my CSV file is correct and will submit it as a private message.

I suspect I have some mismatch but cannot discern where that would be.

I cannot address this at this moment but will have an update later today or early tomorrow.

I will submit the ticket number to the previous responder in a private message.

    Thank you for your reply.

    Hi MAMorelSr,

Firstly, I’d like to say that to perform this PST import in Office 365, it is required to create relevant target mailboxes in Office 365. These mailboxes should be licensed with Exchange Online licenses. According to the simple error message, it seems that you didn’t create such mailboxes or you have just created some unlicensed users and just use the login address in the CSV file. If you have just created some users without Exchange Online licenses, please assign required license referring to the article below:

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Assign-or-remove-licenses-for-Office-365-for-business-997596b5-4173-4627-b915-36abac6786dc?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

Then, in the error message, the archive mailbox may also not be enabled. So if these mailboxes have Exchange Online plan 2 licenses assigned, you will also need to enable archive for these mailboxes.

Enable or disable an archive mailbox in Exchange Online

So you will need to check the Office 365 addresses in the CSV file and make sure each address has a mailbox with archive enabled.

Then to import PST files into Office 365, there is an article below for the detailed steps. You can refer to it and check if all the required steps has been performed.

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Overview-of-importing-PST-files-and-SharePoint-data-to-Office-365-ba688e0a-0fcb-4bd7-8e57-2b669564ea84?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US

Also you can provide some screenshots of the steps you have done and the detailed error message to us for our further research.

Moreover, please also provide us with the ticked number in private message if you contact the support and open one.

    Regards,

    Yang

    Hi Franky,

    Thank you for responding.

I plan to contact Cloud Services on Monday morning.  In the meantime I was hoping to locate someone who has actually performed this task successfully and to hear from them what they had to do in order to make it happen.

Since you are requesting the case number (which I left at work) I assume you are a Microsoft tech with access to those Cloud Services tickets.  Thank you for stepping in.

I am attempting to hear from someone who has real world experience so I can pick their brain.  If you have successfully done this for more than one PST file I would like to exchange info.

    Do you have that experience?

    Hi MAMorelSr,

From your description, you are using import service to import PST files into an Office 365 account and it fails.

Since you have called “Could Services”, could you provide the ticket number from them so that I can review the case logs and move forward on this case?

To protect your privacy, I have sent you a private message to collect it.

You can access the private message via https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/privatemessages/list.

    Thanks,

    Franky
