Using my iMac, I entered a series of numbers in a Microsoft Excel spread sheet column as currency. All of the number have a $ sign in front of them and I want only the top number (and later, the total) to have a $ sign. How do I get rid of the extra $ signs?

Re: "If the result of a formula in a column or Row, the entire Column or Row must be formatted for Currency."

If what you wrote is what you meant, Bull.

In the screen shot the first & last figures are formatted as Currency, but the intermediary figures are formatted as Comma. This is a very common [preferred] method in worksheets that deal with currency values in order to avoid cluttering the sheet with a meaningless overabundance of currency symbols.

    Hi Richard,

You can customize each cell's format to suit your requirements.

Simply select the cell you wish to edit and click on the cell format in the ribbon as referred to in my screenshot. If you do not wish to show the Dollar ($) sign, you can change it from Currency to Number.

You can learn more about number formats in the article below:

    Format numbers as currency.

That won't work. If the result of a formula in a column or Row, the entire Column or Row must be formatted for Currency.

    I've trimmed the above window.

When clicked a Drop down list of all currency symbols available (which also proper formatting) appears.

If a currency type has been chosen in a column or row, and you select all except the first and last item then when you select none the symbol will disappear, but the formatting will remain.

Thank you. It works! I just had to remember to allow for the correct number of decimal  places. And the column total was correct, even with a mix of Numbers and Currency entries.
