Why on earth are you suggesting to completely remove Office when all that's needed is to quit Excel?

I have a much simpler idea to install updates.

    1. Restart your Mac
    2. Open Word
    3. Go to the Help menu in Word, choose Check for Updates to launch AutoUpdate
    4. Quit Word
    5. Use AutoUpdate to install the updates
