Problem embedding Excel spreadsheets into OneNote 2016

I’m running Windows 10 Pro on a SONY laptop. In the past I have embedded Excel spreadsheets into OneNote with no problem. After the embed, you end up with a link to edit the spreadsheet (in Excel) and an image of the spreadsheet in its present state.

Now I recently installed Office 2016 via a subscription to Office 365 Home. As a result, both Excel and OneNote are now the 2016 version.

The problem is the following:

  1. If I try to embed a new Excel 2016 spreadsheet into a OneNote 2016 page, I get an error message that states the following: Although the preview image did not load, the double-clicking on the Excel logo pointed to by the arrow above results in the spreadsheet opening in Excel 2016. If I right click and pick refresh, as suggested, I get the same error? If I double-click on the Edit icon that appears when I first do the embed as shown below; I get this error:We're sorry, we couldn't make a preview imageRight-click and  pick Refresh and we'll try againif I right-click and pick Refresh I get the same message again.

If I double-click on the Excel icon that appears, I get the following error message:***The file is currently opened in another application. Close the file in that application and try again.***Even though the file is NOT opened by another application at this time?

Is anyone else having this problem? Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Nope. No one has been able to resolve this issue. I believe it is ONLY a problem with Office 365/2016 if you are using the 64-bit version of office. As I stated in an earlier post, I have another laptop that is running Windows 10 Anniversary update with Office 365/2016 32-bit and it works with the same Notes notebook and excel file from my One drive?

    Hello Frank,

Go to FILE>Account>Office Update>Update Now to update it and verify the result.

If issue persist, try repairing the Office suite following instructions mentioned in the article below and see if it helps.

    Hi Frank,

    Thank you for the reply.

Try to save Excel file locally on computer then check if issue persist.

    Hello Frank,

Please provide us more information before we proceed.

    1. How are you embedding Excel file in OneNote?

2.What is the complete error are you receiving?

    1. What is the versionof Office are you using?

I look forward to your reply to assist you further.

    Thank you.

Here are the answers to your questions:

    1. I am using the insert Excel Spreadsheet/Insert Existing Spreadsheet function of OneNote 2016
    2. I posted this with my original post but the images are no longer visible for some reason. Here it is again

"We're sorry, we couldn't make a preview image. Right click and press Refresh and we'll try again."

The LINK to the Excel file is actually now in the OneNote Page but the preview image of the spreadsheet is not there. If I double click the little Edit button that is created, I get the following message: "This file is currently opened in another application. Close the file in that application and try again." even though the file is NOT opened anywhere else?

If I double click on the Excel icon that is created in the process, the file opens in Excel?

So, the only problem is that the preview image is no longer being created properly.

    1. The version of Office I am using is 2016 - downloaded using my Office 365 Home subscription.

Also, the Excel spreadsheet I am trying to embed is located on my OneDrive, not on my local computer.
