Hello, I am having trouble with Excel 2016 not exporting files from websites. When I open the file up it will show a blank grayed out excel sheet. I will have to go under properties of the excel sheet and unlock the file in order open it up. If I unlock the file some of the links and data from the original does not show up.

    Hi Alan,

If you just upload the affected files onto a SharePoint site collection, I’d like to confirm if the files are originally an HTML or XLA file but with an .XLS file extension. If yes, you may be unable to open the Excel files. You can refer to the workaround in https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3181507 to see the result.

Moreover, I’d like to know the version number of your Excel 2016. Could you check it via File>Account and stay on the page, and then capture a screenshot for us? If the version is lower than 6965.2053 or later, I suggest you change the channel of Office 2016 and update to the version mentioned to give a shot.

If the affected files are created via previous Excel clients, create the same file via Excel 2016 to check the outcome.

Please let us know your updates at your convenience.

    Thanks,

    Cliff

I have the version where you download it from the Microsoft website with the subscription to office 365 Enterprise E3.

The formats of the file are the 97-2003 versions of the excel and its the .xls file type. I have done fresh installs and it did not work.

    Hi Alan,

    Thanks for your updates.

What’s the version number of the Excel client? Office 2016 of what version are you using, the MSI version or the Click-to-run version? Which types and formats are the affected files? It seems that you have encountered multiple issues when you opened the Excel files.

Given the situation, I suggest you do an Online Repair first and then create a new file with the links to see if you can open the new files.

    Thanks,

    Cliff

When I download excel files, I get one of three errors from Excel

    1. "Excel could not open [filename].xlsx because some content is unreadable. Do you want to open and repair this workbook?"
    2. "Excel cannot open this file. The file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."
    3. Excel opens up with a gray worksheet.

The work around method I did of downloading the file, then going into the download folder and right clicking the file and unlocking it does not solve my issue for the corruption/errors that are made into the excel sheet. This only solves the issue of the excel file as being opened up as a gray sheet.

I also did the methods you provided me and it did not work.

People on this site are having the same issue I am having. https://www.drupal.org/node/2125543

I cannot get [edited by MSFT moderator] links to show up onto the excel sheet. These links make it easy for me to go directly to the salesforce.com tickets by just clicking on them.

    Hi Alan xD,

To clarify the issue, I’d like you to confirm and provide the following.

    1. What do you mean about “I am having trouble with Excel 2016 not exporting files from websites.”? Are there some messages popping up when a blank excel sheet is opened? About “I will have to go under properties of the excel sheet and unlock the file in order open it up.”, could you give us some detailed steps? It is appreciated if you can provide some related screenshots.
    2. If you encountered issues when exporting a list from a SharePoint site collection, check if the issue occurs to a specific list or a specific site collection. If yes, I suggest you do the following to see the result first.

    a. Exit all Office applications.

    b. Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Credential Manager > Windows Credentials.

    c. Remove all credentials there(This will remove your stored passwords.).

    d. Run regedit as an administrator to open Registry Editor.

    e. From Registry Editor, browse to:HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Common\Identity\Identities.

    f.  Check to see if there are any folders listed under Identities. If yes, delete them.

    g. Restart computer and navigate to the SharePoint site collection to re-export the list.

    Thanks,

    Cliff
