Subtotal function does not re-calculate when I change the filter

I have a list of items with dollar amounts. I want to show the subtotal dollar amount when I filter the items by who owns them. I'm using the subtotal function =SUBTOTAL(9,J6:J700) to get a sum of only what's filtered. It works great at first. But then when I filter by a different owner, the total dollar amount stays the same instead of re-calculating. Please help!

I can think of two possible problems:

  1. Calculation is set to manual (File, Options, Formula tab)
  2. Some amounts are actually interpreted by Excel as text (you should see a small green triangle in those cells. Click such a cell and a tiny box appears with options to fix the problem)

As suggested by Jan Karel, please do below two thinks

    1. Check your excel calculation mode (Tab -Formula then Calculation option  short key - ALT+M+X+A)
    2. Select column and do text to column (short key - ALT+D+E then Delimited (Option) Next, Next and Finish )
