I have Word 2016 assigned to as the default app for my .rtf files, and they can be opened *from* Word.

However, clicking directly on the file name leads to a screen that says 'How do you want to open this file? Keep using this app [Word 2016] But clicking OK, nothing happens at all.

Hi,

There are some reasons why file association for Word 2016 is not working properly. Can you provide us with more information for us to isolate the concern more precisely:

  • Windows update version.
  • Word 2016 update version.
  • To avoid and check software conflicts, do a clean boot and try associating other .rtf file just to isolate if this is file or client concern
  • Some protocol of Word 2016 might also be corrupted. Use Repair an Office application just to be sure.

Let us know the outcome.

Best regards,

I am trying to uninstall iTunes through the Control Panel and I get the error message that I don't have sufficient privileges to open Acknowledgments.rtf last error 5.  I am the administrator on this PC with Windows 10.   The reason that I'm trying to uninstall iTunes is because I can't install an updated version. When I try to install an updated version I get the message: Error with this package error # 2324.  I can't get iTunes to play on my laptop with Windows 10 and I don't want to have to re-buy all my music to use Groove Music.

Thank you. In fact I didn't go through this, because the problem went away when I reinstalled WORD 2000 (and I could then assign WORD 2016 as the default app for .rtf, and it now opens correctly on clicking on a file.
