Hi,

I am using Office 2016 Professional 16.0.7167.2060 version on Windows 10. When I copied an excel file from other PC to my PC, I cannot open the excel object that was embedded in that file (other file type can open normally). It said "Cannot start the source application for this object". I tried to embed some excel object to excel file in my PC and I can open it. I already tried to deactivate all addin, repair software but the issue can not be fixed.

Pls help me to fix the issue.

Thanks,

I suddenly have the same problem. I regularly receive an Excel spreadsheet with an embedded Word object which I have to open and edit. The file extension is xls and I always get a warning that file extension and file format do not match; so far so 'normal'. Since last week I am no longer able to open the Word object.

I have Configuration Analyzer open in the background

    Run an online Repair

Tried to open Excel in Safe Mode (which results in a 'Welcome to MS Office splash?!)

to no avail. I need to be able to edit that file. It comes from a client and appears to work for other users, so it's not a corrupted template at their end. I have asked for multiple re-sends and tried those, nothing.

    Now I really need help.

    Thanks,

    Anne

    I have a similar problem.

I can't open an embedded word or excel document, that is inside an Excel. When you double click on them the embedded documents appear as pictures, they do not open as documents. The error message is "cannot start the source application for this object".

I created the original Excel on my Dell X15 (with Microsoft office 365 which is right up to date, as is Windows 10), others on their PCs added embedded documents - email to me and I can't open it on my dell. But i can open it on an Apple and on an older Dell PC running Excel 2013. I replicated all the "trust centre" options from the older Dell - but still will not open the files.

Note: as per other problems people have reported: (1)I have no .COM files showing in Excel (2) I even turned off McAffee virus checker, to try and get rid of the problems. (3) In the Excel trusted centre all protected view tick boxes are not ticked.

    Help appreciated.

    Hi Jitendra,

We would like to know more details so that we can assist you:

    1. May we know what troubleshooting steps you have done so far?
    2. Are you also getting an error message?
    3. Are the embedded files saved locally or over the network?

For now, try opening Excel in safe mode and see if resolves your concern.

    Regards.

    Hi,

Download and install Configuration Analyzer Tool (OffCAT), which is developed by Microsoft Support teams. Once the tool is installed, you can run it anytime to scan Office programs.

Let us know how it goes.
