Icon sets with conditional formatting

In my Excel ss, cells A2 to  A100 contain either a Y, N or nothing. I want to use an icon set (red, yellow, or green light) so that when the cell contains a Y, the green light is displayed, when it contains N, a red light is displayed and a yellow light is displayed if the cell is blank. Most of the examples I have found are for numeric values and are not very expalnatory.

How can I do this?

No, they aren't numbers, but you do assign numeric values to a predefined set of text strings. If you follow the instructions at that page, everything will work out for you.

So, it looks to me like the values in the cells being formatted have to be numeric values, 1,0,-1 to be specific
