Site Column using External Data SharePoint 2016

I am trying to create a single site column that references an external Customer list so that I wont have to define the column in each library and use workflows to move documents.

Currently I receive a web part error on the pages that reference the site column in the view.

Has anyone seen a fix for this or know a good work around?

The goal is to have a site column of displaying all customers from a SQL Server table (external application). I would consider using the term store, but I am not sure if any other applications, especially mobile, will recognize the field correctly.

Hi Ben,

Based on your description, you would like to create an external column in SharePoint site. I suggest you follow the steps below.

1.    Go to a list and create a column.

2.    Input a column name and select External Data in the Create Column form.

3.    Select an External Data Source in the External Content Type session.

4.    Click the OK button after making your selection.

5.    Select the columns to show from the list.

6.    After creating the External Column, you will see the columns which you selected.

7.    Click New Item, go to External Column, and select an item in data source to show.

8.    When you return to the list, you will see it populated with data.

Regards,

Yoga
