Split from this thread.

My users getting this issue now. The OneDrive client is attempting to run:

"C:\Users<username>\Appdata\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /permachineupdate"

Our clients are at version 17.3.6390.0509 and after entering admin credentials the version stays the same. Not sure what it is trying to do but users are raising support tickets because of it. Google not showing anything when I search for "/permachineupdate"

Hi All,

I would like share three workarounds for the issue. Below are the details:

================

Symptom:

After you restart your computer or OneDrive.exe, you receive one or more of the following messages:

• Finish installing update. OneDrive needs your permission to finish installing an update.

In the System Tray:

• A User Account Control prompt dialog includes the following program location:

C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /permachineupdate.

WORKAROUND:

Workaround 1:

Enter administrative credentials into the User Account Control dialog.

An account that has administrative rights is needed to update the registry to allow OneDrive to correctly show its sync icon overlays. In the User Account Control dialog, enter credentials that have administrative rights.

Workaround 2:

Create a Group Policy Object.

Organization administrators can modify an existing logon script or create a custom logon script that executes the following command:

C:\Users<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe /permachineupdate

Note: The command must be run from an elevated command prompt.

Workaround 3:

Uninstall unused applications.

Consider uninstalling applications that you aren’t currently using, that heavily use icon overlays. Uninstalling an application that uses overlays will unregister the icon overlays. This could enable OneDrive for Business to display icon overlays again. You may have to restart your computer after you uninstall the applications before the icon overlays reappear and the error messages go away.

More detailed information can be found in the following KB article:

“Finish installing update” dialog appears in the system tray after you restart OneDrive.exe

If you still need assistance on this issue, please post a new thread and we will help you from there.

Regard,

Spike

I was able to run this in an administrator Command Prompt (Right Click on Start > Command Prompt (Admin)) and it made the update notification disappear. Thanks!

This is not a helpful answer because my users (and users in most corporate environments) do not have administrative rights. Therefore they see this annoying message every morning and, as I said in my post, are now starting to log support tickets which costs us time and money.
