Microsoft Word 2016 Unchecking "Update automatic links at open" option not working

I have a Microsoft Word 2016 file with links to Excel 2016 file(s).  When opening Word document it updates the Excel links.  The "Update automatic links at open" option is unchecked, but Word still updates the links when opened.  The links are set to Manual and locked .  Word disregards these settings and continues to update when opening the file.  The same problem was addressed for word 2010 - see https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice\_word-mso\_other/in-microsoft-word-2010-how-do-i-stop-links-to/31925b0e-b4f0-418e-828c-59ba9ead33a8. Is the solution the same for Word 2016? Thanks

Make the change to the Registry as detailed in vOvets' response, but for 2016, the key will be:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Options

    Doug,

You answered the 12/12/16 post I made. I posted another item February 1, 2017 titled "word 2016 sorting by heading styles in outline view". I was wondering if you have any thoughts on how to address this.

The following (table 1) has some of the heading style 1's in a document. Each heading has 10 +/- pages of body text. The headings represent three references, the first part is a date "09-14-06 ", the second is a file name "Turnersville CVS 06 " and the third is a section of the report "Title Use". Is it possible to sort the headings in outline view by the third section first followed by the first section. The goal is to sort the third sections together in date order (Table 2). The order of the third sections similar to that in Table 1 would be great but not required.

    Table 1

09-14-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Title Use

09-14-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Transmittal Period Start

    09-14-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Identification

    09-14-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Controls

09-19-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Title Use

09-19-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Transmittal Period Start

    09-19-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Identification

    09-19-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Controls

09-16-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Title Use

09-16-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Transmittal Period Start

    09-16-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Identification

    09-16-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Controls

    Table 2

09-14-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Title Use

09-16-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Title Use

09-19-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Title Use

09-14-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Transmittal Period Start

09-16-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Transmittal Period Start

09-19-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Transmittal Period Start

    09-14-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Identification

    09-16-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Identification

    09-19-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Identification

    09-14-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Controls

    09-16-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Controls

    09-19-06 Turnersville CVS 06 Controls

The examples above show only 12 headings. These would be simple to sort manually. The word documents contains 3,280 +/- pages with over 1,000 such headings. Manually sorting is essentially futile. What is needed is an easier way to sort by the third section and then the first section. The first section is a date. The third section is generally one of 35 +/- variables. The middle section "Turnersville CVS 06" is different in 95% of the headings including the number of characters and digits and does not require sorting. If it could be sorted that maybe helpful in the future but as of now there is not a need.
