    What color is the Pinwheel?

If it is MultiColor it's a system level issue.(Possibilities: A Macro isn't working correctly, or a bad Font, or duplicate font.)

If it is two shades of Blue is an internal Application issue.

*(Perhaps it's having to look up the location of some pictures or you have some linked information.)*First just patiently wait until it goes away a reasonable amount of time.

Usually, the system level Pinwheel won't correct and you will have no choice but to force quit. In that case, you need to Troubleshoot fonts, preferences. (Try starting Word with the shift key down, and try working on your document. This bypasses the Preferences and will help you determine whether the Preferences settings are defective).

The two-tone blue Pinwheel means there is a Possible file issue. Sometimes, it is a matter of locating possible linked items or other times that may take few moments to clear. If a reasonable wait doesn't clear then you will have to Force quit then choose Open and choose Recover information and start over saving as a new document. You'll have to redd the information that was deemed defective back in.
