Cannot find file on Mac

I have a final Statistics paper due tomorrow that i have been writing for about a week now. I started it on the 5th of May and then did a lot of work on it on the 7th of May as well. I saved it as a regular word document and everything was fine until i tried to access it. Every time i tried to open the file it told me that i did not have access privileges, so i then decided to restart my laptop. After i restarted, i cannot find any form of the file at all. It was as if i never wrote it or saved it or anything. I cannot find it anywhere and i either need to rewrite it or find a way to recover it. If anyone can help soon that would be great. I am on a MacBook air running OS Sierra 10.12.4 and Microsoft word version 15.33 which i assume is Microsoft word 2016.
