Underscore character disappears

I've got a bunch of documents created in MS Word 2010. They have underscore characters used as a blank line. When the documents are opened in newly-installed Office 365, the underscore character becomes invisible. This isn't spaces or a tab formatted as underlined, but an actual underscore from the keyboard. If I attempt to put a new line of underscores in, that line disappears as well.

I am completely baffled. Any ideas?

Try changing the zoom ratio.
