Cannot click into footer in Page Layout view

I created a calendar from an Excel template.  I am trying to edit the footer, so I switched from Normal to Page Layout view.   I can see the footer in Page Layout.  However, when click the footer, nothing happens. Why can't I access the footer?   I can do this in Excel documents that I create from scratch. Is there some setting that locks up headers and footers that I need to untick?

We tried to recreate the concern and here are the steps that worked in our end:

    Open Excel

    Click File > New

In the Search box type **Academic Calendar (any year)**and press enter

One Template is returned. Double-Click the example and click Create

Note: There is no footer in the spreadsheet created for me using this template.

Click Insert > Header & Footer > Chose any option from the drop-downs.

When you get back to the page you cannot “click” on the text in the header or footer.

The problem is the template has a Custom Footer that overlaps the header and footer.

Change it to narrow and you will see the header and footer are now clickable

    Hello,

We're seeing that you have some concerns regarding the Footer in your Excel template. When did the issue start? Are you experiencing the concern with all the Calendar template?

In the meantime, we suggest that you run the Online Repair then update the application. To perform the Online Repair, kindly follow the steps provided in this link and see if the issue persist.

I just tried editing the footers in other calendars, including existing templates, and it worked just fine.  This template is the Academic Calendar (any year) provided by Microsoft.  This is not a problem with the software, because this works on other calendars - so running a repair will not solve the problem.  I wonder if there is some setting in that file that locks up the header and footer.  Since Microsoft created the template in its own software, it should be able to answer the question.

With the current design of Excel 2016, the option you're referring to is not yet available. The feature you are inquiring about is really a good idea and would be a great feature to have.  If you want to send suggestions, you can send your feedback through Excel uservoice.

Not true!   It does work on other Excel files - and in Excel 2016!   For some reason, it does not work on this template (created by Microsoft), but it DOES WORK ON OTHER FILES.  So, the feature IS AVAILABLE.  Can someone from Microsoft answer the question I asked?
