I just had a Windows update about a week ago.

When I go to open an XML file now it doesn't open in Excel.

It opens like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="WINDOWS-1252"?>

<?"Excel.Sheet"?>

-<Workbook xmlns:html="http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40" xmlns:ss="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet" xmlns:x="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:excel" xmlns:o="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:spreadsheet">

Is there a setting I need to change?

Thanks for your help

Mark

Thank you for clarifying that out, Mark. We suggest your repair Excel by following the steps in this article: Repair an Office application. This should clear any incorrect settings or corruption.

However, we do know the issue started after the update. We can simply uninstall the update by typing View uninstalled updates in the Start menu. This will be our contingency plan provided all other methods are futile.

We'll be here if you need anything else.

    Thanks

    I went to Apps and Features and to Office 365

    Then went to repair...

    It took a while, not sure how long.

    I think it uninstalled and reinstalled.

    I can now open the xml files directly into excel as I could before the Windows update a couple of weeks ago.

    Hi, It probably opens to the screenshot you sent because I'm signed into my email when I go into the file.

    The file comes to me in an email.

    Once it opens into excel I take the data (after it opens into excel) and paste into another excel spreadsheet.

    But now it opens into the example I have in the original question.

    This was the day after I had a Windows update.

    I hope that helps.

    Thanks again

    Hi Mark,

    An XML file is not an excel file extension, although it can be opened and saved as such. Have you tried opening it using a Notepad or a web browser? If so, does it render the same message? Have you also tried opening it from within Excel?

    Also, the hyperlink contained within the file name leads to this website:

    Is this related to the issue you're currently experiencing?

    We'll be waiting for your reply.
