Using Microsoft Word Starter, I cannot save files.

Using Microsoft Word Starter, I have suddenly found that I cannot save files and am always told that there is a file permission error.  I have uninstalled Starter and reinstalled it and there is no change.  I cannot find anywhere where I can change permissions despite trying to follow all the on line instructions.  After File and Info, there is no Protect Document tab or box available.  Help please.

Thank you for the update and sorry for the delayed response. Since the uninstalling and reinstalling, and doing an Office repair did not work, you might have to consider buying the full version of Office suite apps to avoid having these errors. You can check our Microsoft Store for available installer of Office suite apps full version.

Let us know if you need anything else. We're here to help.

    Hi David,

Thank you for the information you've provided. If uninstalling and reinstalling the app did not resolve the issue, then let's try another workaround. Try doing an Office repair to help resolve the issue and see if you can now save the files.

    We'll wait for your response.

Thank you for your suggestion.  I do not seem to be able to find a Repair option in Office - only organise and uninstall.  I am not offered the change or repair options.  Please note that I only have Word Starter installed and not the full Office suite.   I notice in the list of applications to which Office Repair is relevant, as listed if I click on Office repair above, that Word Starter is not listed.  So unless I am doing something completely wrong, I cannot repair Office.

One further screen I find if I persist in trying to save through Save As is the statement "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error".  I have tried to find a way to change the permissions within Word Starter, but cannot find anything which allows me to do this.

I have had one more attempt at uninstalling and reinstalling Word Starter, but the result remains the same.

The latest update I have installed for Office 2010 is KB2436019 (12 April 2012) and the latest Windows 7 updates are KB4048957 and KB 2952664 (18 Nov 2017).  Other recent updates are Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on 15 Nov 2017 and updates for Microsoft.Net Framework 4.7 on 11 Oct 2017.

    Hi David,

For us to get a better understanding of the Microsoft Word Starter saving issue that you're experiencing and provide a resolution suitable to your concern, kindly provide the following information:

    • Are you saving an edited file or a new file?
    • Have you made any changes to your device prior to the issue?
    • Can you provide a screenshot or the complete error message that you're receiving?

    Looking forward to your reply.

    Thank you for your reply.

The problem occurs with both an edited existing file and a new file, presumably as a new file is an amended blank one.

The only changes made will have been automatic updates which may have come through while I have been working on other things on the computer.

Not too good on screen shots, but this is what happens:

Pull up an existing file "xxx" and amend it.  Click right hand top corner to close it.

Screen comes up "Do you want to save changes you made to "xxx"?"

    Click on Save

Does not carry out the usual save action but instead automatically brings up the Save As screen, with the file name as "xxx", Save As Type  Word Document

    Click on Save

    Screen reads:

    This file is read-only (C:...\xxx...)

Please not that my current e-mail address is now ******@sky.com, but it seems that I have to log in using my old address of ******@btinternet.com, to which I no longer have access.  Please do not use the btinternet address for replies.  Please also note that because of my remote home location, I do not have a telephone capable of receiving text messages.  I only have an old-fashioned fixed line telephone so I am unable to receive any unlocking codes etc in text messages.

    Thank you

    David
