A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Hi Paul
does that mean that there is no way for the changed field code not to be displayed?
Marcus

When I compare two documents which have cross-references, the comparison document displays the code REF ref498430194\r\h\* MERGEFORMAT 31 .instead of just the paragraph number 31
The text displays the number 31 correctly when the change is accepted but not in the comparison
Can you help?

Hi Paul

That may be because the heading to which the reference refers has been recreated or because someone has changed its formatting (the \* MERGEFORMAT switch may indicate just that), so the comparison is trying to show you what's been changed - which it can't do without displaying the field code.
