Logical function not working in a table

Help! - I would like to perform a logical function within a table, but excel 2016 isn't making the correct calculation when the data is converted to table format.

My formula is IF(date1>=date2, Value, 0). This works with a simple range, but doesn't work with a table: with a table I get the result 0 regardless of the date.

I double checked that the logical values are not text, formatted as dates - the numeric data is right justified, while text is right justified, even when the format selected is Date. In the best of worlds, I would have one of the dates in the table column header, but it doesn't seem like Excel allows table column headers to be numeric dates. Even using the date function, date(2017,05,01)  in the column header results in 1/0/1900 rather than 5/1/17.
