SharePoint Document Library Template Solution Needed

I have created a document library with a new content type that has a word document template associated with it.

Within the template I am using QuickParts as I want to use and expose Metadata beween my word document and the Document Library.

When clicking on new document, I have one of two bad situations:

If the document library is configured to open in the browser, I do get a new document, but since quickparts are not supported for edit in word online, I cannot modify the content.

If the document library is configured to open in the client application, I get the following results:

 - Using Chrome, I get an error message of: Sorry, we couldn't find your file. Was it moved, renamed or deleted?

 - Using Internet Explorer, I get the same problem.

According to my web search, the feature is not supported in Chrome and for it to work in Internet Explorer, there is an add-on that must be installed.  It looks like there is support for only 32 bit (which is sad considering how long 64 bit has been around).  I've not been able to figure out how to get it installed.  I've seen that performing a repair on Office can get it installed, but that doesn't seem to be working.

I know there is a user voice on how to Improve Word online, as of now it only has 10 votes.  The shame is that this is a great solution that I have used in prior versions of SharePoint and it worked well.  Many people don't seem to take advantage or even know this capability exists.

Has anyone had this working completely within O365?  If so, what did you have to do to get the template to work with the client?

Thanks

Hi Rmillman,

To test this, I set a Word documents as a template in SharePoint online document library by following the steps below:

  1. Go to Library Settings> Advanced settings>Set Allow management of content types? to Yes > click OK button
  2. Site settings> Site content types > Create > Enter Name (i.e. WordTemp), add description > Select parent content type from: Document content types > Parent Content Type: Document > click OK button > click on Advanced settings link -> Upload a new document template (i. e. WordTemp.docx) > click OK
  3. Go to Library Settings > In content types area click Add from existing site content types > select the document template from Available Site Content Types > click OK

After this, I selected my document template from New.

The new DocTemp opened in Word online**.** As you already know we can’t work with Quick Parts in Word online, so I clicked Edit in Word and it worked just fine

Note*: My document library is set toOpen in the browser and I used Chrome browser.*

In your case, I’ll suggest you set your document library to Open in browser and once the document is opened in browser, click Edit in Word, see if this makes any difference.

Thanks,

Neha
