    I was able to get similar functionality by adding "Speak" command to the Quick access bar.

    Available in File->Options...

    I also have this problem. The Read Aloud function just stopped working one day and re-installation did not fix the problem. The icon is still present in the QuickBar, but can't be selected. The Read Aloud button is not under the review tab any more. I am using Microsoft Office Professional Plus, version 1803, Monthly Channel.

    I just bought Office 2016 Home and Student and Read Aloud worked great for first four day or so, but although it is still on the tool bar is grayed out and won't function.

    I did the full repair from the web, as suggested by Microsoft, but that didn't help.

    I found this on-line:

    Read Aloud – is a new, improved version of Speak available in the most recent Word 2016 releases (as usual, Office 365 subscribers only).
