Whenever I attempt to open a word document I receive a field block that says "File Conversion (and the name of the document "Select the encoding that makes your document readable: Test encloding:

  • Windows (Default)
  • MS-DOS or
  • Other Encoding.

Whatever I choose it does not come out in English or word format.

How do I get back to where I was? (English when document is opened)

Where does "scanning" come into the issue?  If the file was created as a result of scanning a document, you will need to use an Optical Character Recognition (OCR) utility to convert the file into text that can be used in Word.
