Excel embed suddenly stopped working

I am using excel embed from onedrive on my website. But suddenly it stopped working so I tried to go back to onedrive and create the embed link once again. However, on clicking the "Customize how this embedded workbook will appear to others" link, it redirects to "https://excel.officeapps.live.com/error/error.html?aspxerrorpath=/x/_layouts/xlembedconfigurator.aspx" - which is a blank page.

Chrome developer tools shows this error -

Uncaught SyntaxError: Invalid or unexpected token error.html:1

Uncaught ReferenceError: writeLocalizedErrorMessage is not defined at onload (error.html:1)

Any thoughts on what might be going wrong ?

    Hi Jesse,

The issue you’re experiencing might be caused by a variety of reasons which we need to identify. To further isolate your concern, kindly check your service status at the Office Service Portal. Please include a screenshot of your service status diagnostics when you respond.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Hi

My service status was fine (no screenshot included). It now seems that embed function is working, but not as it used to. Now when I click on the 'customise how this embedded wokbook will appear to others', it no longer gives an error, and it seems to work.

It seems clear to me that someone at Microsoft has been updating or otherwise working on this feature and interrupting the service to the users (how can you not be aware of this?). I am rather annoyed now, because there is no longer the option for a javascript embed code (previously there were options for Embed Code and JavasScript, but now there is just Embed Code). If I regenerate my embed code the embedded file does appear in my website. However, there is an icon at bottom left the embedded file to 'view full-size workbook'. This is annoying because I do not want my website users to download my embedded file, which this icon allows people to do. Downloading of the file was not possible or was not an option when the embed code was based on JavaScript, which is why I preferred it.

Can you tell me whether or not the JavaScript option for the embed code will be reinstated? If not, is there anything I can do to prevent my website users from downloading my embedded file? (please note I am aware that I can untick the 'include a download link' option, but this still does not prevent users from clicking 'view full-size workbook' icon and saving the file from there.) Is it possible for you to include a tick box option to also prevent the view full-size workbook' link???

    Hi Kristine

I also am experiencing exactly the same problem, which I have noticed only started within the last few days. I have several embedded Excel spreadsheet calculators on my website http://www.genecalcs.weebly.com and now none of them work. If I try to regenerate the embed code in OneDrive and 'customise how it appears', I also get the same blank error page.

What is going on? Can you help?

    Hi Kristine,

Please see Rob's response. It matches exactly with the issue I am facing and also the scenario in which excel files are used.

    Hi…

    Please see my answers below:

    • Which Office edition are you using, Office 365 Home, Office 365 for Business, Office Online?
      • Excel 2013
    • If it is Office 365, which build and version are you using?
      • N/A
    • How are you accessing Excel, using a browser (Excel Online) or using the Excel desktop app?
      • I access Excel on my desktop; create the files; save them to OneDrive.  Then I set them up to share as embedded files (via javascript, not iframe) on various webpages.  Those webpages themselves have javascript in them that manipulates the embedded Excel file.
    • If it is using a browser, does it happen to all browsers?
      • Yes, all browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox) recently stopped loading the Excel file
    • If it is the Excel desktop app, does it happen when Excel is in safe mode? Click here for instructions on how to open Excel in safe mode.
      • The Excel files open fine, both on my desktop and from OneDrive.  The problem is workbook that is supposed to be embedded no longer loads into the webpage
    • Is the embedded workbook a shared file?
      • Yes.
    • Did you make any changes before this issue happened?
      • Absolutely none.  They just stopped loading on every page I had this type of setup on.
      • If you’d like, you can see this happen by going to http://pbs.toolsforhr.com .  Behind the grey box, at the top of the page is where the embedded Excel would normally be, and it would be manipulated by the User fields on the lower half of the page.  But the Exel file no longer embeds/loads.
    • What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?
      • I went to OneDrive, to check that files I saved there were still there.  They were all fine, and they open fine.
      • I was then going to try to create a new javascript token key that I used to be able to create from the Embed setup screen on OneDrive, but that capability is no longer there.
      • That is when I reached out to Microsoft for help.

    Thanks!

    Rob
