PowerPoint does not allow for opening object

Currently I am not able to open an object embedded in a power point presentation. It is an .EXE object (that I have created using another software) and used in the presentation before. In the past, activating the object would cause power point to prompt for authorization to either run the application or not. Now, it simply blocks it and I can not run the .EXE. I looked in the trust settings but could not find an option to allow the app to run. I DO want to run that app during my presentations. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks. (See a screen shot of the problem below).

Hi AJ2000,

Thanks for your information.

I would like to summarize the symptom here, which may be beneficial for other community members:

Description

When we insert a .exe file as object in PowerPoint 2016, it cannot be opened, and we get "Office has blocked access to the following embedded object to keep you safe" messgae.

Environment

Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus

PowerPoint 2016: Version 1709 (Build 8528.2147 Click-to-Run)

Monthly Channel

Workaround

Insert the .exe file location in presentation instead of inserting it as an object directly: Right click and select Link> Insert Link> Browse for File> Insert the .exe file location. In this case, we can open the hyperlink and open the .exe file.

Regards,

Yoga

Thanks. I am looking for a solution to have the self-contained presentation working again (as I used to have). If I do not have access to that particular file anymore, I cannot create a link to it. There must be a way of returning control to the user as far as the type of files one can run.

    Hi AJ2000,

Based on your description, you cannot open embedded object in PowerPoint. I would like to suggest you check the following:

    1. Ensure you have update your Office to the latest version.
    2. Refer steps below to change PowerPoint security behavior.

    a. Before making any change in the registry, please back up your Registry.

    b. Press Win + R > Run Regedit as administrator. From Registry Editor, find and delete the Identity folder:

    Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\PowerPoint\Security

    c. Under Edit, click New, and then click String Value named Level1Remove.

    d. Right-click the new string value name, and then click Modify. Type .exe in the Value data.

    e. Exit Registry Editor and restart your computer.

If issue persists, please go to File> Account> Product Information, capture a screenshot with Office version.

Disclaimer: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Edit at your own risk.

    Regards,

    Yoga
