Subgroups within o365 group

Hi Team,

Is there a provision where i can have a subgroup of any o365 group? I am a o365 admin and we create a o365 group for each projects that comes to us. Meanwhile there are many projects which are kind of phase 2 of the initial one. So is there a provision not to create entirely new group and create a subgroup of the existing group?

For example- I have a mail id ******@xyz.com can i create ******@xyz.com which is not a new o365 group but a subpart of the existing one?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Hi Ankita,

We don’t have this kind of group. So we recommend you submit feedback via https://office365.uservoice.com/forums/286611-office-365-groups. Microsoft welcomes your feedback on its products. Many features came directly from your feedback.

In addition, based on my tests, subsite can inherit permission from the site. Please check if you can use this as a workaround.

Create a subsite:

  1. Login to a SharePoint site>click the gear icon in the right corner.
  2. Choose Site contents
  3. Click New to add a subsite.

  1. In Permissions, choose “Use same permissions as parent site”.

Best Regards,

Zoey

    Thanks Zoey!

But the subsite won't provide a new email id that an O365 group provides while its created. I have submitted the feedback in the uservoice. Hopefully will get some input.

    Best,

    Ankita

    Hi Zoey,

Thank you for replying. Yes you are right, a DL can be a member of another DL. But here i am talking about an O365 group. I am looking for all the functionalities that an O365 group provides for example an SP site, a doc library etc. The subgroup can have some relation with the parent O365 group for example a prefix in the email id which denotes the relationship with the parent O365 group or a subgroup might inherit the group members from the parent O365 group. Is there any provision for this?

    Hi Ankita,

Based on my tests, you can add a distribution group as a member to an existing distribution group. Please see picture below:

If the solution above can’t meet your requirement, could you let me know more details, such as which type of the group is, the relationship of “subgroup” and the existing group, and so on?

    Regards,

    Zoey
