Autocorrect changing fonts

I have a number of autocorrect replacements set up to add macrons into common Māori words. This has always worked well, but suddenly Word is changing the letter with the macron and all subsequent letters into Helvetica , when document default is Cambria. (e.g. the work 'Māori will have the 'M' in Cambria and change the 'āori' to Helvetica). I also cannot highlight and change the letters to any other font, except if I do it one letter at a time! I don't think I've changed any settings, although there might have been an autoupdate. The 'plain text' option is ticked rather than the 'formatted text'. It's Word 2016 version 15.22.1.
