Excel: The file could not be accessed

Morning all,

I receive the following error when opening documents from a local network drive:

I've checked the file path, and it doesn't have any restricted characters and is within the 218 character limit. There are other Excel files and other folders that I can't access such as JPEG's and Word documents.

I can also create an Excel document locally on the machine, save it to the desktop and it opens fine. I move it to the network drive and it no longer opens. When I connect to the network drive (Synology DS1515+) via the web interface, I can also open the document fine. Excel is a 365 installation and it is version 1801 (Build 9001.2138) and we're running Windows 10.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Thanks,

    Hi Scott,

Given your description, the situation seems to be:

    1. You could not open files (Excel worksheet, Word document, JEPG files) on that network drive.
    2. You are able to create Excel file on local internal drive. Open, edit and save it.
    3. Move the local file to that network drive. You are not able to open the file.

Per my understanding, Excel and Office applications work properly themselves. The issue is related to files which are stored in that network drive. If this is a computer at your office, you may check if other computers in the same network can open files from that network drive. The issue might be related to a.network settings, b.your Windows 10 operating system, c.the specific network drive.

In this situation, I suggest you start a new thread in our Windows>Windows 10>Devices& drivers category for further troubleshooting from the operating system part. It's the specific channel that handles operating system related questions and issues. Meanwhile, you could also contact Synology support to troubleshoot if the issue is only related to that Synology DS1515+.

    Thanks for your understanding.

    Tim
