High CPU usage with Power Point

Hi,

I have had this problem in the past and it is now back.   The issue is that I get high CPU when working on a power point file that is in my OneDrive folder.   If I move it to my local machine the CPU drops.    I am on the latest versions of everything..

Windows 10 :  Version 1703 Build 15063.608

Office 2016:  Version 1707 Build 8326.2107

The last time I had this issue I scrubbed everything and did not resolve the issue.  It just seemed to get better but now it is back.   Note that this only happens with power point as I have word and excel documents in OneDrive and those applications do not spike CPU when I open the files and edit.

Looks like a bug to me.

New Update.   I was able to get the problem to stop by disabling the "Use Office 2016 to sync files I open)feature in OneDrive

When this feature is on Power Point stays at 30%.   Note that this is ONLY for power point so not sure what is happening that is specific to that program.

I sit here listening to the fan on my laptop whirring as my CPU sits at ~30%; one CPU core fully occupied by a busy loop in Powerpoint). Yes, I have been having the same problems that Paul has been reporting, and I'm on the latest version of office.  Thank you Paul for your patience explaining these problems to Microsoft, you saved me time going through the same thing. Clearly a bug and not a problem till I run without a power cord and my battery life goes down the toilet.

My experience of sharepoint syncing is that it needs a lot of work. It would help if some of the engineering team spent some time on an airplane editing and creating documents with and without being connected to wifi on the plane, they would find the experience illuminating and might be motivated to improve the way it works.

Felix, would be great if you can file a bug for this and a plus would be to pass on my suggestion to the PM and Engineering team from my 2nd paragraph :)

    Regards

Alistair (An Office 365 user both with personal account and business account)

    Hi Paul,

Please note when Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open is activated, it is expected behavior that PowerPoint will take up more CPU.

It PowerPoint takes up a lot CPU for a simple presenation, please perform the following methods and check if there is any improvement:

    1. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features >  your Office > Change > Quick Repair. If quick repair doesn’t work, please perform an online repair.

Refer to the section Running repair didn’t help. Now What?  of this article to uninstall and then reinstall Office. Please make sure there is no update available for the Office installed.

If the issue persists, could you please provide the following information to help better understand the current situation?

    1. Please confirm if you move a blank presentation into the OneDrive for Business sync folder, does the issue occur?
    2. Please record a comparison video of PowerPoint CPU usage about creating a new blank presentation in Desktop, move it to the OneDrive for Business sync folder,  deactivate Use Office 2016 to sync Office files that I open, and then upload it in your Microsoft account OneDrive Personal(***@outlook.com) and share with us its public link here (right click the file > Share > Get a link).

    Thanks,

    Tina

Yes problem still happens with version 1708 build 8431.2079

Shutting off the "Use office 2016 to sync files I open" resolves the issue.

    Hi Paul,

Have you updated your Office? Does the issue still occur to PowerPoint?

    Thanks,

    Tina
