Foreign characters in document

Question

I have a huge document in Word, Office 365 with the family tree. I have a lot of foreign characters, like the married sign and some of the Scandinavian special letters. I installed Office 365 on my desk top and my laptop so I could edit the document on both computers. When I got this document from my cousin in Germany, all those special characters were changed to something different since I did not have them on my computer. I had to manually fix them all which was a huge job seeing that I have over 10 000 names. Now I have the same problem when I open the document on my laptop. Usually I save the document on iCloud and then open it from there. I have no idea how to find out if have a font that contains these signs and if I don't have them, how to install them on my laptop.

Hi Doug,

I did some more investigating myself. I saved the document on onedrive, then opened it on my laptop, it worked fine. Both my laptop and my desktop have Windows 10 and Office 365. Then I took the original version that I got from Germany in the early 2000s, saved in on onedrive, then opened it on my laptop and most of the special signs were something weird.

Since the orignal was done in a fairly old version of Office, is it even worthwhile for me to send it to you for investigation? I don't want to waste your time. I can certainly send you a copy of the chapter that has most of the foreign characters, the Danish o with the line through it and the letters that look like ae combined.
