Office update process not working

Every time I open Word (or any other Office program), it has the yellow bar up the top saying there are updates available. When I click "update", a window appears saying "Downloading Office updates", then another window appears saying "Office updates are available...do you want to start downloading updates now?". However, when I click "Yes", the window goes away and nothing happens. When I open Word again the yellow bar is still there, and updates obviously haven't happened.

The other problem is MS Word has some serious lagging problems - I have to use it in draft view, and even then sometimes it lags. It has been like it for a long time, but getting worse, and I wonder if the updating problem has anything to do with it. This is rather a pain, as I have to use it for my work as a typist.

Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!

(I have Office 2016, using Windows 10)

    Hi,

When an Office application like Word does not allow by your computer to update, you need to repair it first through the Control Panel. To start repairing this application, Press Windows + X and click Programs and Features. Look for the Microsoft Office program, right-click it and select Change. Then, select which type of repair you want to perform. Visit this link for more information about repairing an Office application.

Once you have repaired with the application, you can retry updating it.

Let us know if the application now works properly.

There are several reasons that your computer will operate in an unusual behavior. Examples are if the operating system is not updated, virus definitions are outdated, Windows Firewall is turned off and there are many unnecessary startup programs during the boot process of your computer. This means programs depend on computer's performance. Visit this link to learn tips and to see what you can do to improve your computer’s performance.

    Thanks for your input.

I tried the quick repair first, but it didn't change anything. Then I tried the online repair, which actually got stuck after uninstalling the program, and left me to reinstall it. So I had to download the program again (if I'd known it would do that I would have waited a few days until my internet data is renewed). Anyway, a few lost megabytes later, Office is reinstalled and working, and the yellow upgrade bar has gone away (yay!).

However, the lag still persists. It's pretty bad now - using a template that used to be fine, I now have to use draft view. So I guess this problem must be separate to the updates one.

So thanks heaps for helping me fix my updates issue!
