Remove paragraph marks between endnotes

MS Word 2011, MacBook Pro, Yosemite, 10.10

I've followed instructions to the letter but can't delete rows of carriage returns in endnotes/footnotes. It came about when I condensed them to satisfy the guidelines I'm submitting to and I've been stuck here for days trying to get the answer. Why in the world is it made this way and surely academics, students must have been in this bind just as much as I am. There isn't even anything in manuals.

•Draft view, then to Endnotes and the Endnote Separator when the paragraph marks are supposed show up below but they don't and as the endnotes disappear there is nothing there to work with. And the marks just won't delete.

Appreciate any help. Must get this paper out!

Thanks

Have you tried formatting them so that the font is hidden and turn off the display of Hidden Text?

This may be clear to you but not to me. Below is one of the cases, and altho' the marks don't show, the space is there. Please show me what you mean.

You sound exasperated but you can't imagine what's going on here.

As I said, you can only delete paragraph breaks before the one that terminates an endnote or footnote. Every endnote and footnote has its own terminating paragraph break.

You cannot delete the terminating paragraph break for an endnote or footnote; you can delete any paragraph breaks before that one, however.
