Saving as template in mac

I can open a ppt doc, but when I go to save this file as a template, its saves, but then I can't open it? I'm on a mac, any ideas?

If you use PowerPoint 2016 for Mac, please make sure you have followed the steps below to save your presentation as PowerPoint template:

 

If the issue still occurs, we would like to know more about the situation. Could you please provide the below information so that we can better assist you?

  1. What is the original file format of the presentation in question?
  2. If you create a new simple presenation and then save it as template, does the issue occur?

What actions have you performed before the issue occurred for the first time? For example, a system update and a software installation. Has the feature worked before?

4. Your exact Mac OS version (e.g. 10.13.2)and PowerPoint version. For Mac OS version, from the Apple menu, choose About This Mac. The version number appears beneath “macOS” or “OS X.” For your PowerPoint version, choose PowerPoint in the top menu bar > About Microsoft PowerPoint and please capture a screenshot of the window.
