OneNote template issue

I have some OneNote templates but when I try to create a notebook from them they no longer create the internet shortcut but instead create a file folder. The newly created notebook opens in OneNote but it has an error message.

"This notebook may not sync properly because another program is syncing these files. Click here to re-open this notebook from the correct location."

Clicking on that then tells me it is syncing but it doesn't sync, it has the error "We're sorry, something went wrong during sync. We'll try again later. (Error code: 0xE4020045)" It never syncs.

My OneNote notebook and template files are located in a folder in my OneDrive folder on my PC. Opening from a template from my online OneDrive folder results in the same problem.

Your problems result from storing a new notebook directly into the local Onedrive folder.

Onenote notebooks on Onedrive (those with the Internet shortcut) have another format than the local notebooks. The necessary format conversion is done by using the File, Share feature.

So the correct way is:

  1. Store the new notebook locally on your hard disk, usually in the default folder

C:\Users**<user>**\Documents\OneNote Notebooks 2. then move it to Onedrive using File, Share

    Hi JMK15,

Please follow the detailed steps in the article Fix issues when you can't sync OneNote to try solving the issue.

If the issue persists, please provide the following information to help troubleshoot the cause of the issue:

    1. Are you using OneDrive personal account or OneDrive for Business work or school account to sync these notebooks? Please capture a screenshot like below.

        2. Detailed steps and related screenshots about how you encounter the error messages both locally and from OneNote Online.

        3. Please expand the Type column in your folder created from an OneNote template and capture a screenshot. And do the same steps for your OneNote notebooks folder.

         4. What actions did you perform recently before the issue occurred for the first time? For example, a software installation and a Mac OS update.

         5. Your Office version (File > Account > Product Information). Please capture a screenshot of the Product Information.

    Thanks,

    Tina
