APPCRASH protocolhandler.exe error when opening a task list with Project 2016

Split from this thread.

I get the same error APPCRASH protocolhandler.exe 16.0.8431.2094 when opening a task list with MS Project 2016. This worked great before. I suspect Windows updates to my desktop broke everything with SharePoint. We need help as SharePoint is now getting a bad reputation.

    I made no changes, however Windows updates are pushed on a regular basis and I am not told when or which ones.

    It is the message stated above.

    It happens on any Project list in SharePoint 2016.

    We have SharePoint installed on SFU servers not in the Cloud.

    Hi Christa,

    Could you provide the following information?

    1. What changes have you done before the problem occurred?
    2. A screenshot of the error message.
    3. Does this iss only occur to specific task list(s)? Create a new task list and check whether problem persits.
    4. Go to Project > File > Account and capture a screenshot about the Product Information.
    5. Are you using SharePoint Online?
