Try to update your Mac OS again followed by updating of Office package again. Sometimes, you have to try many times to update Office before an update is detected. This, in general, solves problems related to Office update.

Ensure your Mac and Office have the latest updates. Here’s how to install updates:

Make sure your Mac has a working internet connection, then:

    1. Update Mac OS X. Open the App store and click on the Updates button. Install the updates.
    2. After, in any Office application go to the Help menu and choose Check for Updates to launch the AutoUpdate app. Let AutoUpdate install updates and then restart your Mac.

This issue began happening with the latest update of Microsoft Excel.  I don't believe it is related to wi-fi networks.  this is a personal license not school or work.

Apple released macOS 10.12 Sierra on 9/20/2016. Some customers are reporting Office 2016 for Mac applications are closing unexpectedly, or crashing when an Office application is launched, or when the computer is moved between Wi-Fi networks (e.g. moving a laptop from home to work).

Customers in a workplace or school network configuration who wish to upgrade to macOS Sierra should update to macOS Sierra 10.12.2 or later for improved stability specific to proxy networks.

    WORKAROUND

Turning off “Auto Proxy Discovery” or “Automatic Proxy Configuration” is a possible workaround, if allowed by your organization’s network configuration.

Go to System Preferences and open Network.

Click on Advanced and go to Proxies.

Check if "Auto Proxy Discovery" or "Automatic Proxy Configuration" is turned on.
