How do I set Word 2016 to NOT show hidden text by default?

I can turn it off in Options > Display, but whenever I (re)open a document, it defaults to showing it again.

In general, Word will open any document using the settings that were enabled in the last previous document opened (so if you had Hidden text hidden in that document, the setting should be the same for the next document opened). But if a document contains XE or TC fields (which are formatted as Hidden), they will be displayed upon opening the document.
