Selecting TOC Manual mark fields

Is there a way Find/Replace all manually marked fields for TOC? I see Endnote mark and Footnote mark in the dialog's "Special" pick list, but I have some attorneys who refuse to use Headings Styles, then insist on manual marks for their TOC. When the text they use for what would otherwise be "Heading 2" is underlined in the text, the manual mark brings that underline to the TOC. I want to find and replace with NOT underline of the whole field if at all possible.

Display hidden text in Word, so that you can see the TC fields. Press Ctrl+H to display the Find and Replace dialog box. On the Replace tab, specify ^d TC in the "Find what" box. In the "Replace with" box, add ^& and press Ctrl+U twice so that it reads "No underline." See screen shot below. Click Replace All.

When you are done, remember to update the table of contents.

    Oh if only I could!!!

Given Murphy's law, I would almost guarantee that at some time they will have an appellate brief rejected by an appellate court if they continue with their hodgepodge approach. A heading will be missed in the summary because not properly marked. Heading styles make it so easy to not make this mistake! They would not want me to be their supervising attorney if that happened!

    Stefan has answered your question.

Tell the attorneys to grow up and use the heading styles. Offer to format them to look the way they want them to look. For briefs, especially appellate work, these are crucial.

I'd love to continue this chat offline. May I contact you via email? I'd love to get your ideas on how to convince the folks at this 70 year old firm why manual is such a bad idea today. Some of the attorneys have been here for 50 years! Practicing the same way they did 50 years ago.

    Thank you,

    -Monica
