We have an Excel document in Sharepoint online that is reporting error Couldn't Open the Workbook. See errors below.

Why would this happen?

How can we recover the file?

Can we prevent this from happening again?

On trying to open the file in Excel we receive error We found a problem......

When we click Yes to we want to try and recover the file, some filtered data is missing.

Hi Angela,

I suggest you restore to a previous version to see if it works. You can do this by right clicking the file > Version History > select an earlier version and click Restore. Refer to Restore a previous version of an item or file in SharePoint

If the issue still exists, to help us clarify the scenario, please provide some more information:

  1. Do you face this issue with a specific Excel file? Have you tried other Excel files?
  2. Was this file created in a previous version of Excel?
  3. What is the type, size and format of the file?

Regards,

Joshua

    Hi Angela,

Since all the previous versions were corrupt, there is no other way to recover the file. We suggest you create a new file.

    Thank you for understanding.

    Regards,

    Joshua

    Thankyou Joshua.

I have been able to restore the file to a previous version.

Interestingly 4 previous versions all saved yesterday were also corrupt before I was able to find one that was not.

The file was originally created in a desktop version of Excel. Before being uploaded to Sharepoint.

    The file size is 19.5kb

We have only just started using SharePoint to store/share documents, so we do not have a lot of files on there at the moment. I have checked all other files are they are fine.
