Excel 2010 error

All of the sudden, I can't open any files using excel 2010.  I get an error that "this app can't run on your pc". If I open Excel then choose the file (from a networked computer) it will open and function, but if I just click on the file to open it, it doesn't work.   Additionally, the entire Office 2010 suite is not showing up under the programs folder and I can't make any of the individual components be the default program.  They are all under one heading of "office 2010 component"  Is this related to the last security update and how do I fix it?

    Issue started yesterday

No changes to the computer (other than automatic updates)  Also it tries to open Excel 2016 which I don't have

I can open the excel file ONLY if I open excel first, then the file.  I can't open the file by double-clicking it in the folder

As of yet, the only files affected are Excel

Issue affects any file that is .xls (files saved in compatibility mode)

I did notice that I can open excel, open the file in excel, convert it to .xlsx and save it then it will auto-open when I double click on it.  However, I have potentially hundreds of files that I would have to open one at a time in this manner in order to stop getting an error message that up until yesterday, I never received.  Windows 10 is literally telling me that it can't run Office 2010

Also, each component of the Office suite used to be listed as an app individually, now they are not.  And I am unable to make them be the default program except to choose "Office Component".  I haven't made any changes to the computer other than the automatic updates.

    Hi,

We need to gather more information for us to know why you're not able to open your Excel files. Kindly answer these questions:

    • When did the issue start?
    • Were there any changes made on your computer or Excel before encountering the issue?
    • Does the issue occur when you create a new Excel file?
    • Can you open the Excel file when using other computers?
    • Do you experience the same concern when you open other documents like a Word file?
    • Is the issue only happening when you open Excel files from your network? Can you open Excel files that are saved locally on your computer?

Just to inform you, the location of your Office 2010 programs are located in this file path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14.
