Cannot open specific dotx file

When opening one of our dotx files in Word 2016 on two of our Windows 7 machines we got the error "Uw bestand is niet gevonden. Het is mogelijk verplaatst of verwijderd of de naam is gewijzigd", which translates to "Your file was not found. It may have been moved or deleted or the name has been changed." On two other windows 10 machines, opening the document works fine (could be a coincidence?).

Editing by right-click the dotx file and choosing edit works fine

Opening a new copy of the template gives the error.

There are other dotx files in the same folder which works fine both on the Windows 7 and Windows 10 machines.

All files are synced by Dropbox.

That actually worked. I was testing even further because we like to keep using the Dropbox sync. I found that moving the file to a random other folder fixed the problem. It looks like the folder itself was somehow corrupt.

    Thanks for your time.

I have no faith in the use of things like Dropbox for the purpose that you are using it.

I am confident that if the file is located in the User Template folder then it will be possible to create a document from it by using File>New

The file is located in a Dropbox folder for syncing trough our company.

I've added the folder in File>Options>Advanced>File Locations, but when opening from File>New, the error persists.

What other options do we have?

    Where is the file located?

The default location for a .dotx file would be in one of the Templates folder locations defined under File>Options>Advanced>File Locations and the way in which the template should be used is to use File>New and then select the template.  That process is facilitated by adding the New document or template command to the Quick Access Toolbar as using that utility will take you straight to the templates folder location via the classic New dialog.
