Problem with file conversion

When I save a document in word it saves it as a file conversion document and asks me to select the encoding that makes your document readable. How do I get my files and photos  back and prevent this from happening again? Thanks for your help.

    Hi Clarence,

Let me verify if I got your concern correctly. Whenever you're trying to save a document in Word, it saves as file conversion and not a regular file, is that correct? If I am wrong, can you elaborate more so I can better assist you with your issue?

I would like to ask you a few questions as well that can help in the isolation of your concern. Please answer the following:

    • Which build and version of Word you are using?
    • Did you make any recent changes to the Word app settings prior to this issue?
    • What is the exact message you're getting when you tried to save the file?

In the meantime, I recommend checking the settings of the Word app and see if Confirm file format conversion on open is enabled.

To check, kindly go to File > Options > Advanced > General tab > then locate Confirm file format conversion on open, if checked, uncheck the box and click OK.

    See the screenshot for reference:

Does the error message occur when you are double-clicking a Word document icon in File Explorer? In that case, see if you can open the document from within Word, via File | Open.

I appreciate that you replied to my post and I apologize that it has taken me so long to reply.  I tried your suggestion and I checked to see if the file format conversion on open was enabled. It was not. I have been watching to see if I could notice when this was happening and I have some information. I have a scanning program called Paper Port. I noticed when I scan something into the program it puts the photo or document on the PaperPort  desk top as it should but it also makes a copy and puts it into my word program this it should not do. When I go to word and open one of these files I get a dialog window that opens. At the top of the box it says Document-File Conversion. It then asks you to Select the encoding that makes your document readable. It gives you three options to choose from. 1 Windows(default) 2 MS-Dos  3 Other. I tried the windows option but nothing happened. There is a preview window but all you see is signs and symbols. Also if you delete the file from word it also deletes it from PaperPort. Thanks for your help

Which format is this file? Note that although older versions of Word can create PDFs, they can't open PDFs.

The format is PDFs. But I'm also having the same thing happen with photos also. The other day I received a receipt in my e-mail. It was a PDF. When I tried to open it the file conversion window opened and I'm not able to read it. I need to find out how to stop this so I can read documents that come as a PDF.
