Remove accidentally converted shared email box

I needed to convert a user mailbox to a shared mailbox, but accidentally started the process with the wrong user. It didn't seem to get very far along in the process when I realized my mistake and hit the "Stop" button. There is now a shared email box for the user, but it doesn't appear to have done anything to that user's regular inbox -- all the setting are the same as they were before. Can I safely remove the newly created shared email box without affecting that user's regular mailbox? In other words are there two email boxes now assigned to that user?

Thanks

Hi ScottJohnson,

Greetings. The reason that has no effect on the user's regular inbox is that you didn't remove the license from this user.

However, if you accidentally converted a wrong user mailbox to a shared mailbox, then you can re-convert the shared mailbox to a user's (private) mailbox in the Exchange Admin center by following steps:

  1. Sign in Exchange Admin center.
  2. Negative to Recipients > Shared.
  3. Click on the shared mailbox that you converted by accidentally and in the right window, you will see "Convert to Regular Mailbox" and click Convert. For your reference:

After that, the user can continue to use his mailbox and you can convert the right one to a shared mailbox. For details, please see: Convert a user mailbox to a shared mailbox.

Hope above information helps. If you have any further concerns, please feel free to let me know.

Regards,

Jennifer
