Visio Add-in for Database Modeling - Support for SQL Server 2017

Hi,

I tried to reverse engineer a database that is hosted on SQL Server 2017 but I got a "The currently selected Visio driver is not compatible with the data source." error.  If I connect to an SQL Server 2012 instance with the same driver then it succeeds.

I checked the activity of Visio Add-In on the SQL Server 2017 instance with SQL Server profiler and it executes two statements successfully before it refuses the connection:

EXEC sp_executesql N'set implicit_transactions off select USER_NAME() select usertype,type,name from systypes where usertype>=257'

master..xp_msver

The question is: how can I use Visio with SQL Server 2017?

Regards,

G.

Hi Gubus2,

Please try downloading the latest ODBC driver for SQL Server and see if it helps: Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server

As SQL Server 2017 was just recently released, the Add-in did may have not been updated to support SQL Server 2017 yet.

So we would suggest you can provide the feedback via the in-app Smiley face.

At the same time, we’d also suggest you can post a thread in the SQL Server 2017 forum to consult if there are any drivers specially for server 2017 that can be downloaded and installed and also confirm if other users that also use Visio are getting the same behavior.

Thank you for your understanding!

Regards,

Sukie

    Dear Sukie,

I have tried the latest Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for SQL Server, but the problem still persists.

And the "The currently selected Visio driver is not compatible with the data source."  message complains about the Visio driver and not the database driver. I also mentioned that I was able to capture the activity of Visio with SQL Server Profiler, and I saw that Visio checked the version of SQL Server and then the reverse engineering wizard of Visio refused the next step of reverse engineering.

I looks like that Visio driver refuses connecting to SQL 2017.

    Regards,

    G.
