Multiple multi-level numbered lists in same document

In our templates, we link numbered lists with Heading styles. What options do we have for templates which may contain up to three independent lists? Is it advisable to create new, custom styles and link the numbering to those to keep them separate? From what I can tell, the Heading styles can only be linked with one list in a document.

List 1:

  1.

      a.

          i.

List 2:

1.

2.

3.

List 3:

INTERROGATORY NO.: 1

ANSWER

I've thought about doing something different for the third example, like using field-based numbering (ugh) and chaining Styles by using "Style for following paragraph" for the Answer. Right now, the users use a Heading style with the text "Answer" in the Number format box of the Define New Multilevel List box. Very inelegant, but it works.

I looked into named lists, but I don't understand the benefit of naming a list, except for maybe referring to it programmatically?

Thanks,

Colleen

Yes, you should set up several multilevel lists. Each of the lists must be associated with a unique paragraph styles (that is, nine styles per list). The instructions at https://shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/numbering20072010.html apply (but note that the article uses the built-in heading styles as examples).
