Does Sharepoint Document ID durable link work when sharing to external anonymous viewers?

I'm trying to create durable links which can be shared externally, so external people without a Microsoft account can view the document with no sign-in required - even if the file is renamed or moved.

We've already taken the first step by enabling Document ID and scheduling this to be applied across of our document libraries.

I've used 'share > view, no sign-in required' before, but our problem is that we want to be able to restructure the folders without those links breaking.

I don't think we can do this retrospectively, but now that we have enabled Document ID, I would like to know if I will be able to create anonymous links which will will not break if the file is renamed or the folder restructured. Does Document ID allow me to create 'no sign-in' anonymous durable links?

Thanks

Hi Marina,

Thanks for your updates.

About the first issue, I would like to explain that on our side, we didn’t meet the issue.

If you meet the issue, we suggest you post a new thread, After that, our engineers will effectively provide help for you.

About the second issue, I would like to explain that you use the feature on classic experience, if you still want to use it, I suggest you return to classic experience:

Based on my test, on classic experience, if I move the folder, the link still works.

Thanks,

Qing

Hi Qing, thanks for your response. I will try that next time.

    I have two further questions:

Can you confirm that these steps will not result in the recipient being prompted to sign in with their microsoft account, even if their browser recognises that they have previously used one?  (we had this problem when we created 'view, no sign in' links before - people were still asked to sign in).

When I created the links that have already been shared with external people, I used the steps 'share' > 'view link - no sign in required'. That is what I used to create the public links previously although I can't seem to find the way to replicate these steps. Is this exactly the same as your process of choosing 'copy link' > 'anyone' - and do you think the old links I previously created will still work if the folder is moved?

    Thanks!

    Marina

    Hi Marina,

Thanks for posting on our forum.

I would like to explain that if you try the following steps to copy link, the link still can use if you edit the file’s name or remove the file:

    1. Access the SharePoint site.
    2. Select the file which you want to share.
    3. Click Copy link>select Anyone.
    4. The link won’t be affected if you change file’s name or move the file to other folders, and you needn’t turn on Document ID feature.

    Thanks,

    Qing
